Stella & Daisy – From Fear to Freedom and the Joy They Bring

Stella and Daisy came to Angel’s Retreat and then to my home from a commercial breeding facility in Lancaster County. Like many puppy mill mamas, they arrived terrified of the world. Everything was new and overwhelming – people, stairs, leashes, toys, even gentle voices. Daisy hid under the bed and wouldn’t come out. Stella would turn away and shake when approached. Neither girl knew what safety felt like.

In the beginning, they were inseparable. They slept pressed tightly against each other because it was the only comfort they understood. Adopting a puppy mill survivor means meeting a dog exactly where she is, and giving her the patience, time, and quiet consistency she needs to learn that the world can be kind. For Stella and Daisy, that slow, steady journey began the day they were adopted together.

Daisy was the first to take small steps forward – learning the stairs, figuring out the leash, and cautiously exploring her new home. Stella needed more time and more intentional support. With gentle routines, soft words, and a “cheese program” to help her associate touch with comfort, she began to trust. After months of reassurance, she discovered belly rubs – and now asks for them with the same joy as her sister.

Today, Stella and Daisy are confident, happy dogs who no longer need to cling to each other for security. They choose where and how they sleep – sometimes together, often apart, always comfortable. They’ve grown into their own personalities: Stella with her soft “yumyum” tail wag whenever a treat might be coming, and Daisy with her earnest “I really try not to bark before dinner” routine that never fails to make me smile.

Their transformation has brought immeasurable joy to me. Watching them become safe, independent, and fully themselves is a reminder of what is possible when one opens their home to a puppy mill mama. Fear fades, trust grows, and dogs who once knew only survival learn how to live, love, and be loved – and they give that love back in ways that change you forever.
